An initiative by the MuMa – Museo del Mare of Milazzo, supported by SEA BEYOND, the Prada Group’s educational program carried out in partnership with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.
Cassiopea, a sailboat transformed into an eco-sustainable oceanographic vessel, has already set sail, carrying a message of knowledge, sustainability and care for the sea.
Equipped with state-of-the-art oceanographic instruments, the boat has become a floating research laboratory. It monitors marine environments and studies the impact of human activity on the sea, with a particular focus on plastic and microplastic pollution.
Education lies at the heart of its mission. Through meetings in schools, ports and yacht clubs, Cassiopea will promote the principles of Ocean Literacy.
A Rotary Course to Discover and Protect the Sea
Project Cassiopea: A Historic
Project Cassiopea will turn a 1970s wooden sailboat into an eco-sustainable oceanographic vessel dedicated to research, outreach and environmental education. Created by the MuMa – Museo del Mare Milazzo with SEA BEYOND, the Prada Group’s educational program run with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, it will sail Italian coasts and then the Mediterranean, led by marine biologist Carmelo Isgrò. The Rotary Fellowship of Sea Lovers has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the MuMa and offers its patronage. Rotary and Rotaract clubs along the route are invited to welcome the boat, engage schools and institutions, and promote Ocean Literacy, citizen science and habitat protection.
MARINA DEL REY, Calif. – Marina del Rey Rotary is about to make history as the first charter member on the West Coast of North America of the new Rotary Fellowship of Sea Lovers (RFSL).
The charter ceremony will take place on November 19, with International Commodore Luigi Falanga flying in from Italy to present the charter in person.
Fellowship is at the heart of Rotary. Internationally, it takes shape through Rotary Fellowships: groups that bring together members from different countries and cultures who share the same interests. Their motto, “Making friends by sharing interests,” captures the essence of the idea, since friendship and collaboration are the foundation of meaningful service.
The Rotary Fellowship of Sea Lovers was created to make the sea a means of fellowship, friendship and service, uniting Rotarians who share a passion for sailing and life on the water.
Members and friends are invited to mark their calendars for November 19 and join the celebration.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – On Sunday, October 11, about 30 Rotarians and friends will leave Long Beach for a day at sea, bound for Avalon on Catalina Island.
The fleet will cast off at nautical dawn, in time to watch the sun rise over the Pacific. The crossing will bring the group into Avalon Harbor by mid-morning. There, participants will spend the day together, with eco-tours, golf and guided excursions to explore the island.
Lunch will be served with a view over the harbor. In the afternoon the group will head back to Long Beach, and during the return passage the crews will raise a toast to the sunset over the ocean.
The outing is a good example of what the Rotary Fellowship of Sea Lovers (RFSL) stands for: a shared passion for the sea, lasting friendships across clubs and borders, and the joy of spending time together on the water.
“It is exactly the spirit of the Fellowship,” organizers say of the day, which combines navigation, nature and good company in one of Southern California’s most beloved destinations.
