Syracuse is located by the sea, resting on the southeastern coast of Sicily. The city extends both on the mainland (with the historic center of Neapolis) and on the island of Ortigia, which juts out into the sea and encloses the Porto Grande. The entire area is characterized by a long coastline with cliffs, beaches, and several coves.

Coastal features: The city is washed by the sea and has a very varied coastline, including sandy beaches such as Fontane Bianche and Arenella, cliffs like those in the Plemmirio Reserve, and areas with beach facilities.

Syracuse offers various options for enjoying the sea, with both sandy beaches and rocky coves, being located on the Ionian coast. Many of the best seaside destinations are just a few kilometers from the city, but even on the beautiful island of Ortigia, there are spots for swimming.

Sandy beaches
- Fontane Bianche: About 15 km from Syracuse, it is famous for its white sand and crystal-clear waters, ideal for families. It offers both equipped beaches and free beach areas.
- Arenella: About 10 km south, this beach offers both sand and cliffs, with beach resorts and free areas.
- Ognina: Along the coast south of Syracuse, it features several rocky coves and sandy inlets.
- Spiaggia del Minareto: A small and charming sandy cove among the cliffs, near the hotel of the same name.
Nature reserves and cliffs
- Plemmirio Reserve: A protected marine area with spectacular limestone cliffs and hidden coves, perfect for trekking, diving, and snorkeling.
- Maddalena Peninsula: Part of Plemmirio, it offers a rocky coastline with various accessible swimming spots.
- Terrauzza: A bathing area south of the city, less crowded and characterized by accessible cliffs and crystal-clear waters.
The sea in Ortigia
Solarium: Along the eastern cliffs, there are public and private sun decks equipped with ladders for easy access to the sea.
Cala Rossa: A small pebble beach in the heart of Ortigia, with a unique atmosphere due to the proximity of ancient walls. The water is clear and transparent.
Spiaggetta della Marina: Near the Fonte Aretusa, a tiny beach suitable for a quick dip, although the proximity to the port makes the water less clear compared to other areas.
